hi mehoose

http://www.racecarjewelry.com/casting.html

uh huh Racecar jewelery is offering it as a new alloy. I was wondering if any one had seen it and if it was really sterling ..... can't for the life of me figure out how it could be and still be sterling silver. copper at sterling levels doesn't colour the alloy enough to make it look like rose gold ... apparently thats what this new alloy looks like. I mean its great if they can do it and still call it sterling .. think of the options it gives us 8)

Wolf,
They were very prompt with their reply.
Here's the email:-

Hi Merryn,
Pink silver is basically 19% pure Silver and the rest is mostly copper. When polished it looks a lot like lighter colored copper.
It rolls / fabricates and casts nicely, but is not available as sheet stock ( not enough demand).
It will discolor your skin if against the skin for a period of time. It should be used for decorative add ons to jewelry that don't stay against the skin.
Very similar in appearance to red gold... but far more workable.
No Stamp is currently made or available for Pink Silver.
So far , no firescale issues have been seen in any castings we have done with it ... We don't get firescale in our deox sterling either.

Hope this helps,
Merryn.

thanks mehoose:

Oh well as grand dad used to say if it sounds to good to be true it probably ain't

guess rose gold is still the only game in town ... somewhat more expensive but you don't have to try to convince the client its the real thing.

Thanks again for researching that for me :)

Wolf,
When they mentioned fabrication I immediately thought of solder.
Here's the reponse.
-----------------------------
Hi Merryn,
Usually, we solder the pink silver to a sterling silver ring using regular sterling solder.... I have a lazer welder which is what I use when
I need to join 2 pieces of pink silver and not get a color change...( i made my own thin welding wire by drawing down a cast sprue).

Currently, There is no known matching color solder for pink silver.
The material was essentially designed for casting purposes since pure copper is nearly impossible to cast well.
--------------------------
I put this in for the benefit of others.
It doesn't fit with what I do but someone might have a use for it.

Merryn.

checked out racecarjewelry. love the number earrings to show your racecar support.

today when i was walking by the tube, i notice jtv was hosting 14kt gold colored chains made in italy. the cable link chains are available in espresso 8) , mint, peacock, and ebony.

here's the link to see them, can anyone share how the chains are colored? (hope the link works, had to search for the show)

reason for edit: the peacock blue color is sold out, guess that is why the link would not work?

Guess the mint is your green gold, not sure on the others.
Ebony could be blackened along the same lines as you do with Sterling?
Blue ? Are they able to add titanium to the mix to still end up with 14K? This could allow a number of colours with heating.
Just throwing ideas around.

My guess is that the chains aren't alloys, but rather coated for the colour.

My guess is that a coloured gold chain sounds more appealing to customers than coloured silver chain.

People are funny that way.

Thanks gingerkid.
I enjoyed reading Hans' tutorial a while back on the making and faceting of the purple gold and it's workability or lack of it.
On the blue gold, I found a very old book with a recipe but the info was that it was too soft for jewellery as opposed to kaijewels saying it's very brittle.
:?
Scaramouche, I agree with you on the 'personal appeal' factor but personally I would rather have a 'mix' of colours as opposed to the total look.
But, that's the 'thing' with jewellery, it is personal.

This discussion was really helpful for me. I purchased two "pink silver" chains about a year ago, hoping to find information about what they were and just how much silver they actually contained. Finally found this site.

They did not have a stamp to indicate silver percent. The color of them is really hard to differentiate from rose gold, but now I won't use them for any jewelry as it is likely the copper content would turn a customer green - and not with envy. Thanks much.
