The GemologyProject Extended: Lapidary Arts

The web's best gemological resource has now added a complete new chapter on Lapidary Arts. We feel that gemology and lapidary are such interwoven subjects that good information on the art of gemcutting can't be lacking on the GP.

The chapter gives room to information on faceting, cabbing and carving next to (video)tutorials, equipment descriptions and a design database.

As with the entire project we are relying on YOU to make it work. If you are willing to share one of your designs with fellow cutters, have made a (video) tutorial on something specific or simply want to teach others how to cut by writing articles on your field of expertise you can do so by signing up for the project and submitting your contributions.

If you need any help, don't hesitate to contact Tim or Barbra by pm.

 Another brilliant idea from Jeffrey Hunt!

Yes Jeff, that was a golden one. :D

We've started straight away, take a look at the Table of content to see the new chapter's structure.

We are looking for contributions that describe the history and techniques of all of the fields Lapidary Art covers in our second, third and forth sub sections: cabbing, faceting and carving.

The tutorial section offers a place to find handy tutorials that will help fellow faceters to advance their skills. These can be in youtube format or written web pages. A help page has been written for this section.

The Equipment section has been created to allow people to find descriptions of the equipment lapidary artists use. We aren't very interested in what brand faceting machine is the best value for money though, we would rather see the variety of tools a lapidary artist can choose from and what they are used for. Remember that the project acts as a valuable source of information to gemology students, novice cutters and other rockfolk, most of who don't have a clear picture of what a cutter's work space looks like.

Last, but certainly not least, a faceting design database. Faceting diagrams are spread out all over the internet, often without a possibility to comment on them. The Gemologyproject is going to change that. The wikimedia software the project uses enables us to categorize the designs in more then one way (by author, by RI, by shape etc etc) and every page in the project has a 'discussion-page' behind it where comments can be left. These discussion pages can acts as a way of reviewing the different designs that will be listed. This way you will know what your fellows think of a design and how it performs when used to cut different stones. The structure this will be in is open for discussion. I'll start a thread in the lapidary section to consult the experts. The final form will depend on the outcome of that discussion.

Like stressed in Barbra's post: we can't do this alone. Together we can turn this into an extremely useful resource!

Share your experiences with others, teach what you love.

A page explaining how to publish faceting designs has been created

It may look like a lot of work but after a bit of practise publishing a faceting design shouldn't take longer then a few minutes.
