Hi,

I'm seriously considering the Gem-A course. As I have a strong interest in mineralogy as well as gemmology, I'd appreciate your opinions on the mineralogy portion of the syllabus. Thanks!

Lots on the crystal structures, optics and the behavior of light in the various structures in regards to gemstones and also instruments, they give the chemical structures but in the new notes you aren't obliged to memorize them (although you can if you feel the need), they explain the physics behind what causes colour.

Does that cover your idea of mineralogy, or was there more to what you are hoping to learn?

Thanks. What about classification systems (e.g. Dana) and identification?

No, the extent of that is silicates, oxides etc. Corundum var: Ruby, Beryl var: Emerald and so on.

One of the girls in my class is doing that course in the fall, so I'll be able to get some first hand info on it then.

It is really a shame that GIA does not engage in a similar partnership.
Even is an advanced degree wasn't an option, wouldn't it be great to be able to get additional, in depth, mineralogical information which included proper use and interpretation of advanced testing equipment.

[-o< Anyone listening?

Are they giving it this year? I understood last year it didn't happen because of too few participants...

Well, she applied and has been accepted. There were a couple of others in my class who had planned on applying as well, including myself, but ended up not doing so for various reasons.

Cost of program.

£3290 for UK or EU students
£5000 for UK or EU students who already hold an equivalent or higher degree
£10,650 for Overseas students (presumably anyone not UK or EU)

Not sure why it would be more expensive for people who already hold an equivalent degree, that's a bit odd to me.
