I wanted to go to GIA but the courses I wanted to enrol in are full.

Is it worth going to Gem-A instead?

I'm biased so I say... Of course you shall go to Gem-A!
But of course that depends on your objective and reasons for the education :)

What courses did you want to enroll in at GIA?

Gem-A is currently the best for Coloured Stones in Theory and Practice, but GIA wrote the book on Diamond Grading.
Also GIA devotes a large amount of their budget to their laboratory staff for continued research and development.

GIA also offers Jewelry Design and Manufacturing Classes not available with Gem-A.

To explain Canucks comments for those of you who haven't been here very long we used to run a weekly chat session where students could ask questions and where we worked our way through the gem-a notes. These were cancelled due to all the students becoming gemmologists :-)

If there are students out there who would like the chats to begin again then let us know. (You don't have to be a registered student anywhere to attend you just have to want to learn gemmology).

Lessons are by qualified gemmologists and regularly the tutors outnumber the students. It's a great resource especially for distance learners doing the diploma or GG course, but it's also nice to just meet and chat about gemmology.

Also, as the FGA exams are coming soon, we used to do exam week blitz beforehand too. I don't know if Frank's schedule is packed full at the moment or not, but mine is pretty free. Anyone wanting online one on one help during the day for either the FGA or the DGA exams, drop me a PM or an email (my username@gmail.com).

Or post your request here...nothing like a week of pre exam cramming to get the knowledge to the forefont of the brain. I'll be happy to help anyone study for any reason.

I have my foundation exam tomorrow and start the diploma in march :)

I found the GIA gives an excellent background for the Gem-A but I dont think the Gem-A is as clear as the GIA in explaining things. I think picking up the foundation book as a complete newbie would be a shock to the system!

At least there are a couple of places near the school where you can get some much needed caffeine before you go in.
