Jewelry Television® (JTV), the nation’s leading broadcast retailer of jewelry and loose gemstones, has entered into an agreement with The Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) to develop a proprietary course for the shopping retailer called ‘Gem Basics’. The online course will introduce consumers to a wide variety of gems and explain the basics of gemology and gem identification. The course also covers gem origins and lore, and will include a basic kit of gem identification tools and a selection of gems.

Very interesting Barbra. I'm sure many 'pro-sumer's' will take to this. Thanks for posting.

That's it. Hell has frozen over.
20 million couch potatoe Gemologists.
At least Gem-A achieved what ISG failed to accomplish.

Very interesting. Went to the more information and followed the link there to JTV, but searching their site, there seems to be no information under "Gem Basics" or "GEM-A"

Heh... I'd seen that Sisk was on the speaker list of the Gem-A conference and wondered what he was doing there. This explains it.

They are getting better though. Disclosure of treatments in the item description on your webpage is one thing but the rhetoric on the main outlet still needs some work... The below holds too much truth...

Agreed....the typical sales presentations on JTV, well, aren't terribly sophisticated.
They use the same approach as television presentations for miracle face creams and hair restoration products.

It would be interesting to experiment with a sales team which presented the product honestly while still "romancing the stone" and treating the audience with a little respect....selling quality at a fair price.

Maybe that's not possible with the quantity of product they have to sell to succeed.

I think that anything that might interest the gem buying public in educating itself via a reputable source is no bad thing. I wonder how many will go on to wanting to do an FGA. Plus, this will bring the Gem-A more into the public eye in a country where the GIA is pretty much the only school that anyone has heard of.

Well I have to say I don't like the fact that reputable organisation like GEM-A associates itself with JTV, we all here know, I think, what they sell and how they sell it, so it does all involved in gem trade no favour to have general public thinking that junk tv actually does it all right, not unless you want to sell your merchandise for 29.99 from now on.

Education is never a bad thing.
An educated consumer makes better choices.

There is nothing wrong with offering commercial quality merchandise.
The great majority of the buying public is in the market for commercial quality.

Just because PayLess Shoes offers good looking ballet style flats at $29., do you think Salvatore Ferragamo is worried about loosing sales?

An $80,000 History of Art degree perhaps might be.

This is education offered by a corporation. A corporation with a vested interest in promoting/selling their own products.

This whole thing might be completely innocent, but the past-record of these jewelery channels is not exctly encouraging.
