Gem-A and Gemewizard announce new Coloured Stones Grading Course

The Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) announced the official introduction of its brand new Coloured Stones Grading Course as launched at their annual Conference from 1 -4 November 2014, at the Business Design Centre, Islington. The new course, run in association with colour communication and gem grading specialists, Gemewizard, is designed to provide jewellers, gemmologists and enthusiasts with an introduction to the world of colour grading for gemstones, as well as providing tools to suggest the pricing of gems.

As announced by Gemewizard President, and creator of the system, Menahem Sevdermish during a talk on Sunday 2 November at the Gem-A Conference 2014, the course will teach candidates the value of colour and clarity grading and analysis, and introduces them to the latest techniques and online/digital grading tools that allow them to study the quality grades of a stone and use the results to gain real-time indicative pricing.

Ideal for anyone pursuing a career in buying, selling, auctioning or valuing gems or jewellery, the course defines grading rules, such as colour, transparency and cut and teaches the evaluation of these techniques and the methodology behind them. The pricing system then allows students to see the potential effect of each feature on the gem’s world market price – giving details on the gem definitions, commercial names and misnomers, including different names and definitions used in international markets. A useful stepping stone to a career in the gem and jewellery world, the knowledge provided within the course will leave students with the skills they need to judge a gem’s quality and price the stone accordingly – leaving graduates with abilities that will assist them in positions as gem and jewellery valuers, auctioneers and traders.

Discussing the new course and its practical application within the gemstone industry, Gemewizard’s inventor Menahem Sevdermish said: “Gemewizard could not have asked for a better partner than Gem-A, a leader in gemmology education, to develop this innovative ground breaking course. The Gem-A Gemewizard course provides participants with important tools and skills to prepare them for a career in the gems and jewellery world. The accumulated knowledge and experience, which usually takes years to acquire in the real trade, can now be gained within a few months. In addition, the Gemewizard intuitive tools allow the student access to vast updated data of colour grades and prices of gems they cannot get anywhere else.”

With such an innovative and interactive new system for the purposes of grading and pricing gemstones, Gem-A CEO James Riley, discusses how the decision to teach a course based on Gemewizard was a logical move. “As with all our latest developments, Gem-A is looking toward the new types of technologies that will shape our industry in the years ahead. Gemewizard’s colour grading system with its associated GemePrice system is a one-of-a-kind piece of software that has an important role to play as one of the ways the gem community grades and prices gemstones. To keep up with the industry and the way it’s moving, we at Gem-A think it’s important to create new educational content that ensures those looking to join the trade are kept up-to-date will all the latest developments in techniques and technology.”

The course will be available to the public in February of 2015. For more information about the course and what it entails, visit the Gem-A website via http://www.gem-a.com/education/coloured-stones-grading-course.aspx

I'd like to see his wizardly device attempt to digest an opal.

Hi Hans,

Well said!

Currently, the course is not covering opal, due to the obvious reason...

However, the Gemewizard research department is currently working on a new interface for GemePrice, especially designed for opals, which displays a reference appearance image and accumulates all its factors into one pricing formula.
Hopefully, the new interface will be launched during year 2015.

BTW,
We are welcoming any member, who wish to contribute from its experience in this field, to help us fine tuning it.
