hello all
I have just started the Gem-A foundation course a couple of weeks ago (evening one - exam will be on Jun 09), it’s just so different (and HARD) to what I’ve studied before! Especially on the practical side, is there anyone who can recommend me some places (hopefully in London) that I can go and see more or practice more… That would be very appreciated! I found 1 lesson a week on practical is just not enough!!

You can also go to any of the branch events around the country an excellent way to meet other students, you are not alone, everyone finds it hard! And also very cost effective way of learning, and getting practical experience.
I would also suggest, look in jewellers, look at stones as much as you can, and subscribe to the stone libarary, so you can practice in your own time.
The Scottish conference in May is a fantastic place to meet people and see things.
Coming up shortly there is a meeting in Bath where Claire Mitchel (Gem-A tutor) will be talking about what was seen at this year's Tucson gem show, as will Tracy Jukes (Stone delaer), and there will plenty of time for hands on with stone samples, if you are a member this is just £10 (includes refreshments) very quick and easy ont he train from London.
Also the Midlands branch have practical gem testing day coming up Sunday 8th March, I've been to many of these and at £25 is well worth going to, fantastic value for money.
Contact details for both these events are on the site.
