It is a very interesting program, but as Julie mentioned wonder how much of it is set up for the film crew
I would imagine that much of it is. Even outside of the loss of negotiating power, everything would have to be set up before you got there, it's the nature of the beast. If they didn't get it filmed the way they wanted the first/second/third time, you'd have to do it again and again. The focus is no longer on the trip itself, it's on getting the shot. No way around that.
This past summer, I went on a mine trip to East Africa with a few other gem people. We actually had a documentary film maker who wanted to come along, something that was declined due to our very tight schedule (5 countries in 3 weeks for me, more for the others as I joined a week into it). That did lead however to some rather interesting discussions on the various pitches that had been made over the years for TV shows based on gem hunting, which I'm not going to repeat because they're not my stories to tell.
All I can say though, is that these guys seem to have avoided those particular "gimmicks", so that's a plus in my mind.

I like watching the show. I like to see where they go to find particular gems. I have a "complaint" (not really) but when they were in Tanzania looking for tanzanite, they never once mentioned heat treating. It might lead people to think that they come out of the ground that gorgeous purple/blue color. But like someone else mentioned, the aquamarine in Brazil was a windex blue. I've never seen aqua like that. Is that for real?? Oh, I want to see Diane's handbags!!! I friend requested her on FB but she probably won't respond...

i really liked the latest episode "Sapphire and Moonstone of Sri Lanka". it was not most profitable trip for them, synthetics everywhere they couldn't find any padparadscha larger than one carat and no rough at all.

It is, of course, great to get some exposure on the local mining, but I wish they would show some really nice gems too.
The fact that they don't find any good gems to show, speaks volumes about how rare a good gem really is, and that you can't come with a film crew to find them.
Also, I know the smiles of the locals so well: Oh, those crazy foreigners!

I watched one episode of this series on the weather channel. I was bored with watching the hunters rolling rocks down the mountain for a large part of the episode.

This is a different series. You are talking about The Prospectors, on the Weather Channel. Both are pseudo "reality" TV, AKA scripted and set up. However, they both have entertaining moments.

My husband, a freelance writer, and I, a budding gemologist, interviewed Bernie Gaboury from the show last Saturday. He was so great. We talked via telephone for over an hour. We are hoping that Rock n' Gem publish the article. Any other places that might be interested??
