Taking a trip to Kenai Peninsula this summer. Whats in the area for gems, rocks, of interest? Gold is not of interest on this one, maybe glacial drift gravels have special things?

Recently returned from Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. I dont believe antler qualifies as gem material, but if it did they have alot of it. Even saw one of the natives carrying around a walrus skull with beautiful Ivory tusks! Again more jewelry material but not gemmy. Jade was probably the only native stone in any abundance. Everything else we saw was imported just like we were. Fishing was great! wildlife posed for all the pictures on cue. Nice place to VISIT. but no rocks of importance here.

There are several public gold panning areas. My daughter lives there and I have made 2 trips. I was able to get slakes of gold each time in the public areas. One picker. the rest were flakes.
On the first trip, I paid to have a sluice for half a day..... not woth the price of the sluice. But it did get me the picker....
ALL of the water was glacial runoff..... that is literally ice water. COLD. Not just good boots, think waders, so you are dry. Think about divers gloves.
I brought a set of exam gloves used for cows....... yea for that.....
It kept the arms dry....
Be prepared for crazy prices for everything from food to hotels. They wanted $7 for a cantaloupe when I was there.
