When I think of field trip I think of prospecting, but thats not the case with gems for most of you. Unless you think of prospecting as the finding of gems outside the normal channels of wholesalers and manufacturers.
I suppose we could visit "rock shops" on the Appalachian trail to find local gems of the eastern US. That would be a field trip. We could go directly to Sunstone mines or Opal mines in Oregon. That would be a field trip. The Tuscon show next spring could be a field trip.

What would be your Idea of a field trip and where?

For me, a good field trip would be to research the different gem mines "nearby" and see who produces the better quality rough gems in person. To be specific, Montana sapphires from currently active operating mines. Maybe there is a small mine that produces very good quality stones but isnt big enough to compete with the neighbors or doesnt want to. Kind of like an easter egg hunt for local rough. There might be more mines out there than I can find in a long weekend and require multiple field trips, or a group to split up and search out assigned regions. Document and share info on what we find.
