We have now created on GIA Laboratory Bangkok website Research pages a new page in which we will post the field report undertaken by GIA Field gemologists.
The first one was just published online few minutes ago:
"The Pailin ruby and sapphire mines in Cambodia", this report in fact is not one field trip report but two as I visited Pailin twice since my arrival at GIA Laboratory Bangkok.
Reading these pages you will discover Pailin but also the way GIA Fieldgemologist work in the field:

Coming back from reading it all:
Man 'o man, Vincent, I want your job!!!
Love the plain writing style, love the info! I'm glad to read that the mining is still interesting to some. In my days as a sapphire miner in Australia I experienced what 'a days work' may bring.... mostly 'de rien', sometimes a months wages. Everybody is hoping for that one stone that will bring salvation. As long as the bills get being paid one can keep on digging and hoping. This is what I recognized in this report.
These kinds of reports are historical monuments. You'll find yourself being quoted in the year 2136 AD in the new edition of 'Ruby and Sapphire by RWH' edited by some smart ass of that age...
Thanks a lot for sharing. these kind of posts get me very agitated to hop on a plane...

The gem miner is married with "hard work" "Hope" is his mistress. Hope is a short cut to deception... but without "hope" the miner cannot survive with "hard work".

Thanks for these kind words...
Ken Scarratt told me an introduction to my job description:
"What I want is simple: I want people in 50 years, when they will look at what we have done, to say: These guys did some good job!"
We are trying to do our best...
This is the first report, the second one will be about Vietnam, then Laos and Thailand.... I hope the following one will be better.
Nice to read that this one interested you.

Is anyone else having trouble downloading this besides me? I have tried about five times now and each time it freezes up part way through the download.

Dear Allen,
I just hope that you are the only one and that you were able to get the pdf.

All the best,
Hi Vincent,
All the pdf. files on the website seem to be fine except the one from the Pailin article.
Something wrong or am I the only one having a problem to download it?
Dear all,
There was indeed something wrong. It should be ok now.
Thanks to have informed me about the problem. Please do not hesitate in the future to send me a pm if you notice an other problem.
I will appreciate!
All the best,

Dear all,
Just few words to say that recently I've added several blogs to www.fieldgemology.org in relation to the recent weekend expeditions I had with friends to Pailin.
If you want to get all the details and past blogs, use the key words on the leftmenu, or just follow the following link:

Hi, The Pailin report is very interesting and thorough. I have been in Pailin for 4 years and operate a website about Pailin Gemstones, and apart from the fact that the roads are much better now, and that there are less and less mines, everything else is very interesting in that report, there are even many of my friends in the photos. If anybody would like to visit Pailin I can surely help to have locations of the current mines (They seldom operate mines for more than 2 months, they just move on to another place). I hope this helps. Mat
