Great Stephen
One is better off staying in school for as long as possible IMO. Life gets really real quick. Practice all you can. If you can stretch the fun parts, do it

[quote="justinkprim"]I was recently talking to the field gemology guys in Bangkok and they said everyone in the lab as a Masters or PhD in some science whether thats geology, biology or chemistry. /quote]
Yep, this is true for the Bangkok lab. They hire science master or phd, and then the new hire has to complete GG and FGA.

I'm guessing it's easier to turn a PhD physicist into a gemologist than it is to turn a G.G./F.G.A./A.G. graduate - who possesses, say, a BSc degree in History - into a PhD physicist.
Without wanting to beat the same drum as 2009, the schools need to start bridging this gap.
Gem-A had made a few noises about something like this over the years (University of Kingston?), but I don't know if it ever materialized.

Gem-A did bridge the gap! If you do an FGA AND A DGA YOU CAN THEN DO A "top up" degree for a year in Birmingham and come out with. BSc in Gemology and Jewelry. Then just 2 more years for a masters degree! The fga/dga/bsc combo is about $27,000 if you do the gem a classes at home and including campus housing for a year. Not too bad compared to 4 years of uni.
