I did not believe it was possible to search the GIA Report Check database without the exact report number.
I guess any database can be compromised.
Bummer.

Thank you for bringing this to the forum, Alberto. Honestly, I never really took a good look at the details of a GIA report as mentioned in the article  . I do have a report on one of my personal stones that I shall now compare others to. This is a good wakeup call.

Recently, a jeweler in south Pinellas County, Florida who I never did business with before called me and wanted me to remove the "GIA" marking off the girdle of a GIA certed diamond. I did not know what to make of it, so I gave her a high price to discourage her. She told me she would think about it. She never called back. I told Jon about this and he emailed me the link to this thread. Thanks, Alberto!

It does not even take a compromised database to find details. People often dispose of personal papers improperly and they are freely available to dumpster divers. A few pages left at a public photocopier or lost on the bus...

I have never purchased a diamond but I would imagine that all such data would be freely available to perspective customers too.

this kind of scam is not news for me, as you know you can issue new report for your stone from almost any lab with small fee, i have seen authentic report presented with Natural diamond but the diamond clarity and color was two grades off the report!! except the weight and laser inscription which was like report..the scammer will also sell the authentic diamond with reissued report... this is another reason i always check stone i am buying. for vvs clarity which is hard to compare with the plot i check proportion measurements...

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.
I don't know if it's still being done. This is news to me. At any rate the original link to the article was moved, so it doesn't show in the original post. It's now here:

http://www.ggtl-lab.org/media/newsletter/Newsletter_3_September2014-A_scam_with_GIA_certified_colorles_diamonds.pdf

I thought it would be good to have it available for newer members to see.
