Found out about this one at a recent show. A gentleman that had lost a finger in an accident tried to cover up the fact by wearing a fake finger. He was wearing the sort that magicians use to perform slight of hand tricks with silk scarves. Instead of stuffing his finger with scarves he was filling it with gem rough.

His method of operation was to ask to look at some stones or find an open table. He would place several stones in his hand and look through them. As he was doing so one or two pieces would magically disappear. The gent purchased some cheaper items. To cover why he had been looking at some of the higher end items he would casually lament, as he was paying for the cheaper items, that he could not afford some of the higher end rough but like to look anyways. Most vendors don't mind people having a drool or admiring their rough.

He was caught when he was jostled and dropped his change. A helpful bystander that tried though he would help stop it from bouncing all over the place. In the confusion the false finger came off spilling his loot out for everyone to see...
