I have been sorting a lot of Morganites in the past six weeks out here in Jos city, Central Nigeria. The material comes from all parts of Nigeria, usually found in close proximity to tourmaline producing areas. Nigeria has been famous in the past years for some superb Morganites, finding exceptional material has become a bit of a chore lately though. Large parcels do appear, but as I earlier mentioned.. the pain is in finding ‘exceptional material’. Thanks to a few smart people in the field, finding exceptional material has become not just ‘hard to find’ but downright dicey, nowadays large parcels are regularly found to carry a good number of simulants right in the bush. Mildly heated Amethyst (light coloured), Rose quartz and heated Kunzites have been picked up from Morganite parcels by myself in the past two weeks, as a matter of fact 50% of a Morganite parcel(in photo below) I came by some days ago was mildly heated amethysts. Of course it’s easy to pick out these simulants in an office, but maybe I should mention again at this point that am mostly sorting in the bush .. no chance for SG or RI CHECKS. A few easily observed physical properties like hardness, fracture and cloudiness(Rose quartz) do help in this separation.. Still leaves a lot of risk for a gem dealer in the field.
Let us know any experiences you have had with morganite simulants.
Cheers all.

Myles,

Thanks for the heads up, it is good to see that there are skilled buyers in the bush these days. I have been having my guys in Africa looking for a parcel of morganite, but so far, it has been difficult to get the quality I am looking for. I will tell them to keep their eyes out for things mixed in the lots.

Steve
