Some overgrowth of smoky amethyst on top of white skeletal type quartz. Shows two hydrothermal events occurred. Quite rare to see from South Carolina. A couple of different specimens. Sorry about exposure ...taken in direct sunlight outside due to stones still being cleaned in acid. All hand dug last April at machine dig

Lots of manganese oxide left on this one

Thanks Merryn!! :)
Not sure if I showed this one yet
This is from the same pocket as my specimens but was the first and best pick and is in the mine owners possession.
It shows a wonderful snow white skeletal quartz crystal smack dab in the middle without any overgrowth on top. It is so rare to find amethyst and skeletal on the same specimen and only a handful have ever come out.

(sorry pic is blurry...taken inside)

Would the smoky color be the result of natural irradiation?

The minoscam page says one of these is the most plausible cause of the smoky color

Various investigators have suggested that smoky quartz is colored in one or another of the following manners:

The pigment is an inorganic compound, probably of trivalent titanium. (15, 16).1

b) The pigment is a carbon compound. (7, 9, 18, 19, 28).

c) The pigment is a suspension produced by the action of radium radiations. (37, 42).
