The Czech town Karlsbad is world- famous for its mineral-rich hot springs. The hot water flows through a piping system which is exchanged after several decades. The water has deposited continuously some of its minerals on the wall of the tube. Cutting sometimes reveals impressive Aragonite structures like annual rings of a tree - depending on the mineral composition with slightly varying colors! These pipe slices can be 40cm in diamete!

Interesting! Thanks for sharing, Barbra :D . Do they sell these sections to the tourists?

I saw one of these rings at Thanksgiving.
It was purchased in Tucson last year.

There is also an accompanying book in German, the title of which, escapes me.
Here is a specimen sold through Bonhams's:

Alrighty, then  ... don't think I'd pay the price, but that's just me.

Does make me wonder if this occurs in other mineral hot springs :-k . I'm thinking of the hot springs at Berkeley Springs in West Virginia. Very nice and soothing water :D . It's said to be the country's first spa. Don't know if anyone has thought to tear up the water pipes.

I think you may find this sort of deposit in any water pipe of age.

Berkeley Springs might be the oldest "European-style" spa in the country but the Yavapai were enjoying the hot springs in Arizona (Castle Hot Springs) for a long time - I'd say that's a spa of sorts. 8)
