Hi, I was playing around in the dessert of California with a metal detector and came a area where I was getting a lot of hits. This is one of the stones I found, it was fused to a large group of rocks. It's 55.5 grams, 227 carats, a hardness of 7.5-8.0, it has metal in it as inclusions so it's somewhat magnetic. It also has some white material in it as inclusions, I'm not really sure what that is. I had an edx analysis done but only had time to scan one area so I still don't have a clue as to what type of stone it is. I did notice that the rocks in this area appear to have a lot of olivine in them, it's mixed in with almost every rock you pick up. Thank you
From the description I would have guessed slag. From the photo it is impossible to tell. It could be any of the many many rocks with a similar appearance.
Thanks for the reply, I would not go as far to say that it is a meteorite but based on what I have been seeing looking at a lot of rocks from that area, I do believe that these rocks may have been involved in a impact event some time ago. I will be the first to admit that I could be wrong but the evidence do point in that direction. I have had a couple of gemologist look at the stone and all they can tell me is that it is a gemstone but not like any that they know of. I am 56 and I have been picking up rocks all my life but have never seen anything like what I see in these rocks. I just wish I could show everything that I have seen. Here is a copy of the edx scan, I had a lot of stuff to scan so only had time to scan one area and I'm sure that's not enough to tell what all is in this stone. I will try to show the other stone tomorrow.
Gemstone? That noun is a little premature. I would call it an unidentified specimen.
Unidentified, I couldn't agree more. I have more than my share of specimen that can not be explained, even after I have had them scanned, they remain a mystery. I have tried to find answers on several different forums and at times I've seen people get highly upset when they are shown something that they should be able to explain but cannot. I'm not out to waste anybodies time, just searching for answers.
