Krystal and I discovered two locations along the Missouri River in South Dakota, that produced nice gemmy crystals of selenite. These are some of the smaller ones I had pics of. Filled up a few boxes worth easily.... Thanks Stephen I appreciate it! We just had thise discussion on another site concerning water and selenite. Actually water doesn't seem to have much effect on these small gemmy ones. All were found on the surface fully exposed to the elements, including the harsh SD winters. I also soaked lots of them in water and SiO2 for up to a week at a time which no discernible change in luster or structure. Some material is more susceptible to water than other I was told...some just disintegrates if it even looks at water..LOL Luckily we were able to collect quite a few from just the surface. I just love the fact they display their monoclinic form so well they look just like little spodumene crystals ![]() |
