I just got an email with this picture with the following note:
Quote:
I was recently in the NC mountains after the torrential rains and floods and was walking along a river bank that was recently 15 ft above flood stage and found a few green gem like stones still embedded in host rock the larger of the stones looks like it has gold flakes inside it...its very dense and a deep green color .... I'm having a difficult time getting started on a path to determine what I have found if anything... pictures from my phone really do it no justice... any help would be greatly appreciated.... thank you for your time....

Huh. Looks kinda like slag to be honest. We have dunite, serpentine and even a bit of jade in the mountains, but none of it looks like this. Just look at how shiny the fractures on the edges are. The only NC stone that this really looks like to me is slag from Endor Furnace, a civil war iron refinery.
