Hi!

Has anyone shot gemstones with both these Canon lenses? I'm trying to decide wether or not to spend money on up grading my 100mm macro lens to the newer L series version.

Is it shaper? Better color reproduction?

Thx

I'm not familiar with those lenses but IMO many older objectives present much sharper images. My suggestion is you check out some test sites like dpreview.com or other like it.

Neither lens is bad and either one will easily do the trick. I prefer 3rd party lenses though as they offer as much image quality but at a far lesser cost!

As for shooting gemstones and such since you would, or should, be on a tripod, IS is of no real use and does sacrifice some sharpness.

Take a look at any of the following:
1. Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX Macro (best macro lens ever made)
•Sigma 105mm
•Sigma 70mm
•Tamron 90mm
•Tokina 100mm
•Sigma 50mm f/2.8 macro (one sharp lens, even with a 2x TC on it!)

As for older lenses, you can get an M42 adapter for your Canon and shoot any number of fantastic older macro lenses. Of course they are manual focus and manual aperture, but most macros are, or at least should be, done in manual focus anyways.
•105mm Kiron/Lester Dine
•Pentax 50mm macro
•Pentax 100mm
•Tamron adaptall-2 90mm
•Sears 55mm macro
•Tomioka 55mm amcro
•Mamiya 55mm macro
•Yashica 55mm macro

The list can be endless.
