By popular demand, I’ve added a few pictures to show the photomacrography setup that I used for my first photographs. It’s quite basic – in addition to the Wild M420 scope and the Olympus E-510 camera I have a coupler from Diagnostic Instruments (Wild 38mm photoport to T-mount), a 4/3 to T-mount adaptor, a anti-vibration pad (a rubber floor mat), a piece of Corian that sits over the rubber pad (I would have used granite but didn’t have any handy), and a fiber darkfield unit with adjustable light source. My house sits on a concrete slab so I use the ground floor rather than any upper floors, and luckily I live on a quiet street so there is little vehicular traffic that could induce vibrations. The darkfield unit is mounted to a round plastic plate that I found in Home Depot, which is in turn attached to the scope’s base with two small machine screws.

John Koivula's "Photomicrography for Gemologists" was the motivation for the basic setup. I have another fiber light source with fixed dual-pipe lighting for overhead lighting, and still another fiber source with a flexible light guide if I need to “paint” any additional light onto the stone. Next up is getting a polarized light setup and a first-order red compensator (I could use in finding one of these at a reasonable price). I also need to find more time to play around with this – it certainly is more fun that my day job!
