I have been working very hard experimenting with ideas that I learnt from this forum.
My Coloured stones like Spinel, Tourmaline and Sapphires have been coming out well as you can see.

However when it comes to rubies using the same technique as used for the other stones they go darker,

Using a maglite torch aimed at the stone provides some extra light but also nasty shadows and reflections,

does anyone know what lighting should be used or how to fix the lighting for ruby photography

Ruby is always considered a nighttime stone in jewellers circles, as it always looks best in incandescent light. Try using a diffused halogen bulb which will give you the good colour you are looking for and should avoid the shadows and reflections.
