This is a spectrometer mounted on an ISA slot card. So you will need to round up an elderly but hopefully reliable computer to operate it. The card plugs into a slot.
There is a cuvette holder and lightsource not terribly unlike what Wolf Kuehn is using for a light source only I think this lightsource is better because it probably has more watts.

You would put the stone in a holder you would need to rig a little and then the fiber would carry the light from the stone to the spectrometer card.. You would use the OOIBase software to read record and analyze the spectrum. OOIBase software was pretty mature when they quit with it and works very well. It does not need a hot rod computer like the newer Java based software does. SpectraSuite now in v2

As the auction states this gear was near $3,500. IF someone paid up to maybe $1000 for it it wouldn't be the worst deal ever made. Might not be a bad buy for someone wanting to wet their feet in spectroscopy.

The fiber. light source, and the cuvette holder would all work with later USB interfaced spectrometers. The spectrometer card is not upgradable or improvable.350 -1000 nanometers in 2048 pixels.

If you know what an ISA slot is and can locate an empty one on your computer, then you have the know-how and equipment to get this spectrometer up and running. Range covers LWUV to NIR, so don't need any fancy lighting to reach the SWUV. And the slit width will get you about 2nm resolution, which is useful for almost any gem application. This would be a steal at less than $700.

A frenzy there in the last two seconds, but sold for less than $550. Was it you, Conny?

I don't usually follow these auctions, but back to back of the same rather unusual item, featuring the same picture?
Is that normal?

Happens very often.

The seller obtains a lot of identical items. He photographs one and writes one auction and then uses the same copy and photos over and over.

For example if you search the word xenonics and then check "completed items"
you will see five copies of this auction: ... category=0

The only difference is the sellers intake tag number. They are an ebay resale store. 100% legitimate.

Auction is for a real live xenon arc flashlight that Uncle Sammy paid $2,000 for. Perhaps the kewlest thing I have EVER seen Real live xenon, not metal halide. Suitable for photography and spectroscopy both even in the field. Will run off a cigarette lighter outlet.

The seller of these Ocean Optics units is known to me. They have had much scientific equipment on ebay previously though I don't think I have ever actually bought anything from them. Usually they open their auctions way too high.

Nope unfortunately it was not me.
I set my roof at 510 dollars as shipping and taxes will fast make it become the 700+ which was my roof.
Many holes to put money and it is not a piece of equipment I am in real need of right now.

Any mail yet Brian?

It has been a rough start to the school year with the unusual snowfall we had in Alabama. But finally I get to my mail, and WOW! That is an absolutely wonderful photograph. I will have it matted and framed and then hang it in my office.
