The desorption electrospray ionization described there uses a charged solvent stream to lift ion's off the target material. Thus if you have trace surface contamination or other soluble materials to analyze, it would work great.
I think the only thing this would analyze would be the presence of illegal drugs in the fingerprints of the last person who handled the stone!
The laser ablative method requires a small vaporization of the gem surface by the laser beam and subsequent ionization. If this method was combined with their ion trap mass spec in the instrument, then it would overcome the objections ted thelemis has on LIBS vs LA-ICP-MS, as you could have that method (LA-ICP-MS ) in a portable analysis instrument you could haul around with you..
