It is with great sadness I'd like to announce Dr. Hanneman passed away on December 12, 2020. His legacy will live on forever!

Thanks Alberto, but I can't get used to looking at my own ugly mug.

For some reason, it dredges up memories of old limericks about sailors, seamen, and submarines.

What's your stimulation method and orientation to the bead?

The microscopic laser works like a macroscopic laser called a "dye laser". Like the macroscopic version, we use a fluorescent dye that is "pumped" by an external laser. One of the interesting points about this laser is how little "pump" light is required to turn it on. Some suggest the microscopic laser is sensitive to single photons, but I wouldn't go that far.

In the avatar photo, the very weak excitation laser beam is directed "into the page" and is focused to a spot located one-quarter radius distance away from the left edge of the bead (i.e., well outside the avatar's range). This isn't the best position for the focal spot; our studies indicate it should be located just outside the bead's surface. Unfortunately the photos for that position, collected at an exposure rate of 1/1000th of a second, are overexposed.

Ah well, always an excuse to repeat measurements.
