I just received the Beck Hartridge spectroscope I bought off eBay a couple of weeks ago. I was amazed when I opened the box as all of the equipment was in like new condition. Whoever owned it hardly used it and many of the cuvettes were still wrapped in their original packaging. The spectroscope itself is in absolutely perfect pristine condition.

This eBay purchase makes up for all of the bad experiences I've had over the years. Almost.

Much of the equipment consists of a light source and adjustable mounting for the spectroscope and an array of sample holders of different types.

The spectroscope itself really is an amazing piece of precision equipment. I agree with Gene that it is the ultimate non-electronic unit. I whipped out a pink CZ and measured the location of 14 lines, recorded them and then looked up the spectra in the book "Tables of Gemstone Identification." All of them were spot on.

This works by simply turning a knob to match the lines on two different spectra and then you read the wavelength to 0.1 nm (1 Angstrom). The precision and accuracy seem remarkable. There is also a precision slit control calibrated from 0-40.

I can't believe I never had one of these things earlier.

Anyway, if you're in to spectroscopes I really recommend this version. I'll have to figure out how to build a viewing stand for it.

It comes WITH a viewing stand which includes a shade which you stick the
objective lens though. It migh like quartz haloogen bulb but the base is a good beginning for a transmitted light stand. All you might want to add is maybe an iris and a gem clip and your regular fiber optic illuminator for reflected light.

You could also stick it onto one like Barbra just got very easily. They are both Becks and the mounting screw is the same. 1/4-28 TPI

A similar unit the dogleg version in a bigger box just sold for $300. I posted that one here. I don't know who got it. It has most of the same features as this one..

When I wax poetical about ebay I am usually thinking about these in my little reptilian brain. I never expected to ever see one of these in person.
I suspect the reason that they didn't get used much is that probably when they were sold, the people that bought them then shortly thereafter got a Bausch and Lomb Spectronic 20 which is a classic piece of gear which trained probably five generations of biologists and chemists. So these just stayed safe in the box waiting to be bought by a gemologist who would give them a good home.

I think the 0-40 scale refers to thousandths of an inch 40 of which make a millimieter.. I'll double check.

Glad you like it and that it is like new. I had the same experience. :D
