Ethiopia keeps living up to predictions of large and wonderful gemstone discoveries. My favorite piece of geology, the Mozambique belt, will continue to deliver for the foreseeable future.
Below are a couple of pictures of a XTL from a new Aquamarine discovery in the East of Ethiopia. Without giving out the exact local, I will say that is close to the Somalia border, so not a very secure area. This sample came unannounced with my latest Emerald package. It is multi-kilos in size, has excellent color tone that should heat nicely. This one is heavily included and would only cut very small stones, so better kept as specimen. Of course the sender claims that large completely clean XTLS are also being found, but the Ethiopians as usual are quoting crazy prices. I have asked them to get me some to confirm that the deposit is capable of producing real gemmy material. We will see. But I thought you all might want to see this early sample.
I picked up a few crystals of decently blue Ethiopian aquamarine at Tucson 2017 with a strong sheen down the length. I wonder if they are from the same area.
