I have found the stone in a cave in the south of france. And it has quite a smooth surface

Your best option is to find someone local to help identify it.
Based on current mindat.org stats https://www.mindat.org/countrylist.php there a over 36,000 different recorded localities your cave may be in, if it is indeed at one of these localities. Just saying you telling us you found it in cave is not a great help in helping you.
A qualified experienced gemologist all ready stated that you will need to know the agent causing the coloring, you will need to get it tested to answer this.
Here is a link to search the vast gem and mineral possibilities on mindat.org https://www.mindat.org/min-960.html#autoanchor9, scroll down the page and see all the varieties and go further to the localities section and look for your cave area and see if you can locate it and the potential possibilities.
