Ok... it looks like I'll have to be the first to try emeralds from Simodi/Somaliland :D
I should get some in 30-45 days... and I'll let you know.

Until now I've just found out that a lot of the rough mined in Somaliland takes the flight to Dubai... and since there are not many Somaliland cut emeralds around I think that they are sold as emeralds from somewhere else... but I've never had any in my hand and I didn't even find so much on internet about this topic so I don't know to what other emeralds they look like...

A bit out of topic... maybe I should have called this 3D "Non columbian emeralds..." :-)
These are zambian... good clarity and poor color... they look more like greenish aquamarine than emeralds...
I'm getting one just for a closer examination...

Ciao...

Zambia/Zimbabwe Emerald's Specification: fewer inclusions and blue or gray overtones.

As a little correction to your post above I have to report that I have seen and traded a lot of emeralds from Zambia that didn´t match your description: The saturation and color were really pleasing. Deep green, moderaterately included (for emeralds) and quite resistable to cutting procedure. This just for the record, so the readers of this thread don´t assume that all the material from the copper belt is looking like greenish Aqua.

I really look forward to hear from your Somaliland Emmies! It´s always accellerating my heartbeat when I hear from new discoveries ....

I was talking generally, Zambian Emeralds are darker comparing to Colombians/Brazilians Emeralds, and some Zambian Emeralds can be very pleasant than other mines.

Zambian Emeralds also normally have a black mask, as compared with most Colombians, don't. I also understand, may be wrong, that Zambians normaly don't need as much oiling, & there are more untreated stones vs. Colombian Emerald.

My source finally remembered about me...
Some really bad photos of some rough from Simodi mine...
Let's see the faceted stones in a coupple of months...
I extimate around 500gr of rough... probably 500cts of faceted stones of various grades...
Probably 30-40cts of high grade gems...
