@Ray: thank you so much for you interesting considerations! I do really appreciate the reports regarding your on-field experience I will take care of this stone! Ciao
Hey, just recently reactivated under a new username and digging through old posts. Generally the more brownish tinges (hence making it appear darker) the less desirable.
Elvis picture is a nice example of "Fanta" orange which command the highest market prices (if clean and well cut), although i have seen stones that are even sweeter/neony than that. There was a production of Spessartite from Tanzania as well that produced ultra sweet Fanta color's, the sweetness enhanced by the large amount of silk in the stones.
Even in Sri Lanka (Bogowantalawala) there have been finds of Spessartite in the form of rounded pebbles including small amounts of Fanta which i have seen with my own eyes in the rough, at the mines. A by product of large and small scale Sapphire mining from the alluvium. However, most of the stones have a brownish tinge to them and a few are actually a pleasing light orange with zero brown and a touch of pinkish. Personally i prefer those than the fanta. Cheers!

The question is: I noticed that there is a wide range of colors for spessartite (from orange to red). Is the orange hue the most valuable color for spessartite? Or other hues are more desirable?...
Luca, your stone is a nice catch and I think that the bright orange are definitely most expensive of the spessarite garnets.
I personally think that desirability of the other hues will vary based on buyer personal preference, fashion, season, current fad, etc... but market demand will probably keep Mandarin at the top of the price structure.
