Is this law in effect now or is there a 60 day wait for the law to be effective? Nothing on the web about selling new imports from Burma, whatever, a site in India still shows the ban in effect-a few questions still unanswered- :?: :?: 8)

The text is quite clear. It is "no longer in effect".

First Burmese rubies, now Cuban cigars. What's next?

My cousin and his wife made a great living in the Burmese ruby business until President Clinton put the now rescinded orders in force. His company had to shut down in just days and he suffered financially.

That is great news for the Burmese people. Although the Act was aimed at the government it hurt a lot of normal people who were involved in mining and the gem trade.

I was in Mandalay October 2007 when the Saffron Revolution protests occurred. At the time oil prices had spiked to such a degree that the ruling Junta could not support their oil subsidy program. The resulting fuel price increases caused the price of rice to increase to the point that the people could barely afford it. The monks who are dependent on morning begging for food were the only ones who were brave enough to take to the streets. The people would still give to the monks, but could only spare a few grains of rice.

It was a frightening time for the Burmese. After the first days tear gassing of the demonstrating monks, the Junta sent in the military. Transport trucks full of battle hardened soldiers and their well worn but oily weapons filled the streets. I saw convoys of jeeps with anti aircraft machine guns rolling towards the protests. It seemed they were preparing for a massacre. Thankfully that did not occur in Mandalay. The protests in Yangon however were far more deadly.

When talking to the locals about the protests they were concerned with the price of rice and fuel. A few of them would talk about political prisoners and Suu Kyi but only as an afterthought. I was very surprised when I left Burma to find that everyone I talked to was wrong, the protests were about said to be about democracy. It seems food riots weren't politically expedient enough so we were all told they were fighting for democracy.

The Tom Lantos Block Burmese JADE Act of 2008 could not have been enacted by President Clinton. George Bush was President at the time.

The ban actually began in 2003 and yes, George W. Bush, rather than Bill Clinton, was president.
2003 is when my cousin had his Burmese gem supply halted by Executive Orders.

Bernie co-sponsored the legislation.

Sadly, that was a common and stupid American way of doing things. The Burmese just sold more to those countries that did not have a boycott. It didn't affect the price significantly.
