Wondering about the unheated market for ruby these days. Im trying to learn more about pricing and wanted to get any experts opinions if any can advize. I was in Chantaburi and came across this. Any idea how much an unheated ruby, 1 carat size ruby should go for these days?, here is the pic.

Its unheated 1.02 carats from Sri Lanka

Thanks so much

Please take my opinion with a grain of salt as I'm pretty new to gems. :D

I've seen similar hue/saturation unheated Sri Lanka ruby, untreated, no coatings, no visible inclusions to naked eye selling in the $1500-$2500/ct range. Deduct for visible inclusions and remember that wholesale is 50% of that price.

Hopefully, other members with more expertise and experience will offer their opinion.

My favorite unheated ruby and sapphire dealer is Peter Grummit (Grummet?) of Aspara Gems.
He has a retail shop at Hatton Gardens.
Check the prices. :D

In my opinion the stone on the picture is a sapphire and not a ruby.

Maybe the picture but if this is the real color it is closer to a sapphire.

I agree with you Marlow, as my monitor is interpreting the color.

Thanks everyone, really appreciated!!

I didn't see any prices on the website but thanks for the info.

Also, it looks light a sapphire in some light but in other lights it looks more like a ruby, it really depends on the light source.

Hard to say whether its a ruby or sapphire

My advise - buy a nice little synthetic ruby and compare them.

Ruby is only the red variety of corundum - the other ones are sapphires.

Prices are difficult - only in a few gems I can say this is the price per carat. Collecting/ buying gems is not collecting coins or stamps with a fixed price.

From a picture like yours it is difficult to say how much.

The right price will be the price somebody will be willing to pay for that stone, taking into account that it is neither very big nor very red. And the Sri Lankan origin is not the one that makes people dream for rubies. I am not sure that the fact that it is treated/untreated will make a big difference pricewise in that case.

A pretty stone anyway, that just needs to find its loving home !

Thanks for the input.

I assume that unless the stone is a very good size and a good color, even untreated stones are not something that has a very liquid wholesale value unless you shop it around quite a bit and put the time and effort in marketing to find an interested buyer, whereas diamond is much easier to state the value. Thanks everyone!

No,

we need more information - clarity for example.

Is there a cloud at 7-9 or a bad picture?

I have several Sapphires with such a color and I love them - often much niecer then many "rubies".

300 pct could be to much but 800 pct could be o.k. - depends on the stone in real life.

What did you pay or what do you want for such a sapphire?

I only have this picture unfortunately

I didnt buy this one, It sold for 14,000 baht I heard later on.

The asking price was 15,000 baht.

which is about 500 usd for the stone.

I thought it would have been a good buy. I contacted that person again and he said it sold. He has more stones to offer for around this price but If I buy it for investment and just to keep I don't mind as long as the stone has some value (such as diamond) as I am not a serious gem dealer and just like to add it to my own collection

500 is o.k. for this sapphire with a nice fuchsia color.

Fine addition to a collection but not an investment.

I paid around 300 pct for smaller (0,60 ct ) heated and unheated stones. And they are really expensive if they are larger.

A very nice stone with this special color - and def. not a ruby.

A sapphire with a brownish hint should be much cheaper.
