I have two stones that came to me in a case with the label Shanseres (Diopside). They look very much alike but upon closer examination one looks very much like Peridot with the doubling of the facets when viewed with a loupe. The R.I. range for these two stones overlaps as does the Specific Gravity and color range. So how can I tell what i really have? I do not have long wave/short wave light.

Check the ri anyway, if you are lucky you will get a figure outside of the overlap range.

Thank you. Looks like a spectroscope would answer many of my questions. I'll have to save up for one, a SW/LW lamp too. Maybe Santa will be generous with me this year...hoping!

If you have a Chelsea filter you may be able to rule in Chrome diopside.

Intriguing that they are so closely matched in properties.

Most of the time, the birefringence of peridot is around 0,037 while that of diopside is 0,030 only.
