Numerous posts and general information about Spessartite Garnets from North Central Nigeria classify them as dark, some even refer to them as opaque! From my little experience with the finished stones, I think I know better.. Depending on selection(not all rough Red garnets are equally open), design chosen for facetting and also size! These garnets which start out dark admittedly, end as intense red gems, matched in colour by only the best rubies(off course a price comparison is out of the question). Certain shallow designs with good light return have been known to favour these garnets, the Late Jeff Graham's Seagull, Quickie 1, 2 & 3 especially and various Checkerboard cuts have delivered spectacular results from my experience. Also noted was the difficulty in getting good results from rough red Garnets bigger than 5grams, except in rare cases. I've seen some wonderful results from my ventures into cutting these garnets so far, have begun building a small collection listed below; 5ct Pair(Square Checkerboard) & 4.1ct (Jeff Graham's Quickie). Will display much as I can, and try to show the differences between rough and finished stones. All photos captured in office with natural window light*** Feel free to contribute
