Bacteria 'eat' sulphides (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6051342) and olivine (http://www.mdpi.com/2075-163X/4/2/553) so you had better keep your pyrites and peridots clean too!

There's a reference at the bottom of the article listing the scientists and title of the paper it's based on. I'm agnostic about whether their explanation is right or wrong. Just thought it was interesting.
