Oh, scapolite.
Wow. Reminds me of my days at DGemG. They would always throw one in to screw you up.

The refractive index, birefringence and SG are really close to quartz AND the pesky stuff comes in the same colors: amethyst, citrine, smoky.

yup, its not the most attractive stone, quite a dull yellow color. but i heard it changes color in sunlight or something, although haven't seen this affect.

Sometimes scapolite will do fun things with LW & SW UV light.
Give it a shot. :D

Natural yellow range scapolite will not change color with sun exposure, but the irradiated purple scapolite can be unstable.

They're referring to the tenebrescent scapolite out of Afghanistan. These are probably African stones, which will not tenebresce.
I like scapolite, but by the numbers its optics are much like quartz. It has some value but the yellows won't net you a mint.

I cannot think of anybody who would wear this stone as a treasured jewel, except maybe some foolish gemologists like us... :D

There are customers for every gem variety these days, as long as the price is right.

Those are stunning.
But still in the realm of collectable curiosities.

Most consumers:
"Can I see that topaz?"

It's actually scapolite, an unusually fine example from Tanzania, expertly fashioned. :D

"Oh, do you have topaz?"
