Post subject:  paraiba tourmaline value questions

Hello everyone,

I just joined the forum, its a treasure trove of information!

I do have several questions regarding a paraiba tourmaline i own.

My dad bought a brazilian paraiba while he was on a trip to batalha(embassy stuff) around 1992. Now my mum got old and she doesnt wear her jewelry anymore,so i decided to sell it.

I'm in jewelry retail, although i dont know the value of brazilian paraiba(never sold one).Based on my google research, over a carat doesnt exist anymore(thats brazilian stones),also i will need a certificate shows that the origin is brazilian. So i decided to jump to bangkok and sell the stone there since its the center for colored stones. Also ill get AIGS certificate with origin.
In turkey(where i live),none of the gem labs we have give origin certificates and no one here knows about paraiba since the market is focused on diamonds and gold.

The problem is,i havent dealt with paraiba before,so i have no idea about the quality since color is primary factor apparently.

Will it be possible to get an expert opinion about the quality of this stone? Its 2.5 ct.

Please note that i'm NOT trying to sell it here, just to get an idea about the quality and approximate usd per ct valuation.

Here are the pictures for reference:

Hope to hear from the experts soon.

You will need to get an identification and origin report.
Perhaps contacting GIA Dubai would be wise.

You can ship.

This is kind of easy for me, if u want the actual value for Brazilian paraiba tourmaline, u need a cert as the one posted, at this time the certed material can retail for as much as $40,000.00 to $60,000.00/ct, depending on cut & color up to 2.99ct/stone. Without the cert, one is looking about 1/2 that amount or less, here papers are important-steve...

Thank you Ruby,

Like i said,i already know that i need to get a certificate in order to sell it.

Could you please tell me a quality estimate based on the pictures? If its really terrible color/medium quality or top level?

Thanks.

Why block the GIA Report number?
Posting it will verify that the GIA actually issued it when entered in GIA Report Check..

Touchay! A flaw on my part, 1 of many-the correct cert from GIA is posted, the question about paraiba from other sources is answered by almost all the appraisers i use, any tourmaline from any other source other than Brazil, is considered 'Paraiba like' & values are set on this info., usually 1/2 that or less of the Brazilian listing. Ive been corrected many times about this because many years ago the land masses were not split as they are now and the material from the Brazilian location is about in the same area as the land masses were, if you rejoin the continents back as they were. The material from the mines in Brazil is said to be the best of the lot-steve... 8)

You asked about the quality of the stone pictured, im a collector, not a professional-the pics i see show a slightly included stone, good color for paraiba, cut looks good, the size u show is a little larger than some of the stones i see for sale today-ive seen 2-3mm stones at shows going for $200 to $300/stone, for brazilian material reported not verified. The GIA can only make a guess from info they have on file as to crystal structure, cut, color, & whatever they refer back to a set standard to make an educated guess. I know people who are sitting on large quantity of rough from Brazil just waiting for the right time to have new stone cut. Have ur stone lab tested by GIA, or AGL, u might find u have a very rare item that would make some interesting jewelry-steve... =D> 8)

Im posting pics of the paraiba i have, placed in a nice pendent. The stone looks good, is clean and well cut, the color is blue with a slight greenish tint seen in a close up of the stone. The appraisal on the single stone is outrageous in the retail market, but this stuff is getting hard to get unless one is ready to put out large cash, the pics with 2 stones are older before the up-grade to the larger pendent-steve... 8)

Post subject:  Re: paraiba tourmaline value questions

Hey Steve,

your answers made me got confused a bit. You say retail is between 40k to 60k(sale price will be 1/3 of that),and 2-3 mm stones go for 200 300 USD per stone.

that is a massive difference in price.

Post subject:  Re: paraiba tourmaline value questions

The difference in pricing is the fact the tiny paraibas are usually not certified as Brazilian, the big bucks goes to the stones that have positive ID to origin from labs that can, to the best of their being, report origin per known info within their data banks. Anything other than lab certified origins automatically defaults to 'paraiba like' status, per most appraisers. Tiny stones as i describe before may well be above the $300/stone figure if lab papers exist for each stone, & i mean that a lab cert. that states paraiba tourmaline, origin not requested, is not a cert verifying paraiba tourmaline unless there is an origin stating, Brazil. I see plenty of stones for sale stating paraiba tourmaline, nice color/cut/clarity, but no origin, most likely not Brazilian- 8) [Ive been there, done that]

Thanks Steve,

I was wondering what kind of price i should say when i deal with bangkok dealers with origin certificate.Didnt wanna sell it too cheap.

Now i have a rough idea.

Post subject:  Re: paraiba tourmaline value questions

the 1st thingie u must get is verification of stone so u know what ur dealing with, origin from..., as Barbra said, go to reputable lab, request info about the stone w/origin, no matter where, then u know what ur dealing with. Find a dealer u can trust or have dealt with before. U can always get a 2nd opinion. Most of these dealers arent dumb & have been in business for years, family business etc. The dealers know usually what is before them & will offer their wholesale or below, everything has a price so dont be afraid to negotiate a little, helps to build a bond between u and buyer, remember u have the last say on selling, u only have to decide ur bottom line, its best to go with a friend for security. If retail is $1000.00, wholesale could be in the 20%-35% range of that figure, only a guide-luck, u made me think a little, i need a nap! 8)
