While browsing online I came upon this:

That's a new one for me. Has anyone ever heard of it?

This is just a WAG but I found a site where someone said they'd bought one and it resembled a mix of smoky quartz and citrine. So "Smitrine" may be someone's name for that particular mix.

I emailed the above company to ask what it was.
I'll let you know if they get back to me.

Hello, Smitrine is in the Quartz family and the name is a trade name for a stone that is a combination of Smoky Quartz and Citrine, just as Ametrine is a combination of Amethyst and Citrine. It is my understanding that the source is depleted as it was found in a rock crushjing quary and they managed to salvage some of the rough before it was crushed. I hope this answers your questions, hovever if I can be of any further assistance please let me know and thank you for visiting our website.

Here is the answer I received very promtly.

It reminds me of the tanzoisanite that Brad posted recently.

Hello, new here, saw the thread on Smitrine. I bought a few of these about 10 years ago but can't find any smaller ones like for earrings. I like the brown/yellow 1/2 and 1/2 combo like ametrine. The ones i have are half smoky and half citrine , kind of cool looking. But they are huge!!!!!!! two about 25 ct and one close to 40cts. Wanted to find smaller ones. I read that some of what is called Smitrine are just yellowish brown solid color stones, mine are like ametrine. cut in the middle one color on the next. I thought about sending them to GIA to get them verified but think the cost of doing that may be more than the stone is worth LOL looking foreward to meeting more "gem" folks and learning so much more.

A lot of the Zambian citrine has smoky zones. I would lool into that stuff, untreated, inexpensive and a great range of colors.

Ah, ok. This stuff is probably irradiated Brazilian material. I think I have seen cut stones for sale from time to time, but it isn't that common an item.
