When I spoke to the auction houses about Bill Sechos' accuracy, they said he'd never got anything wrong. It seems the SSEF agrees with Gem Studies Laboratory...

Many years ago I was a biochemist with a passion for all things spectroscopic. UV-vis, CD, fluorescence, NMR, mass spec...my supervisor called me "an equipment junky". Any excuse to fire up a new machine.
So I was intrigued by your question about Kashmir sapphires and fluorescence. In my recent reading, I found a possible reference to the "very faint patchy orange reaction under LWUV" that Bill Sechos' report describes. From Chapter 12 in Richard Hughes' book: http://www.ruby-sapphire.com/r-s-bk-india.htm Table 1: Properties of Kashmir sapphire Fluorescence UV: Generally inert (LW & SW); but often with small fluorescent orange zones, occasionally yellow in surface openings (LW)
It is so nice to see a thread where we end up with such an amazing result. The quality and rarity of this stone makes it feels like we have all participated on a successful treasure hunt.
Imagine, a fine, large, natural sapphire from the most historical and rare location, Kashmire. Simply wonderful.
bonhams will give you an estimatation between 60k and 90k usd. i buy between 100 and 225. if you are interested in selling it off privately and without big commission, then i will prove to you that i am a sapphire trader on a daily and global base, followed by a good offer. just let me know and i’ll come to where ever the stone is..

Wait....where am I? Whats happening ...where ave I gone? This surely isn't the Gemology online forum, is it? Tim....Miss B? Tiiim.... Stephen you there...hello...is alberto there? (aka. platinum terminator) Hello????
Obviously, I have entered the twilight zone or maybe the "upside down" like on that TV show....hmmm...
Clearly this is a very special occurrence and an extremely rare anomaly, especially with the classic saga we go through day in and day out....year after year.....
typically it's a bigger sized alexandrite or sapphire/ruby. oftentimes with exceptional clarity, evenly distributed color close to the optimum hue/sat./tone. Seems to always be a 50-100 year old stone that was passed down from a mom or grandparent, or maybe a family heirloom.
Time and time again we/you have to break their poor little hearts with the truth that their alex/sapphire is a syn./sim/treated gemstone instead. The wishful thinking and dreams of grandeur they had for the 5 or 6 figure pay day they had hoped for....now gone forever...sigh.... All the time folks would pop in and want an armchair diagnosis of their stone. Very few got lab reports when we asked them to(...cough..ruby306 ), most didn't
This time though, it actually worked out as it should with this actual 100 year old heirloom of great color, size and clarity! Ha...who would have thought! Did I read right that it was shown to have been Kashmir origin? Really? Icing on the cake I still can't believe everything worked out like it did....sheesh! mark this day down in your calendar, ladies and gents...

I guess some of us old gem miners and explorers are just so used to high miss rates that we just keep going no matter what. The big find is always in the next shovel of dirt. Probably has to do with that feeling you get when you actually find something special. Nothing else like it!

I mean really...damn..i still can't believe it....how many times have we all heard that exact scenario, Fodder started with? Same ole story with the "I took it to a jewelry store and they said this about it....." Then the obvious apprehension of Fodder with shipping said stone to a lab(early on in the thread). 98% never get past the "send it to a lab" portion of the discussion, and we end up never seeing them again. Crazy to see it actually work out this time....kashmir...ha...jeez louise.
