Interseting and always useful to see others "considered" opinions.
Thank you for the link Barbra.

Generally speaking, when I see "ethical" and "gemstone" in any sales brochure, red flags go up. It is an interesting article.

Although they can almost never meet the standards of an "ethical gemstone" chain of custody, and proof of benefaction, the most ethical gemstone mining I have seen is the small "artisanal" mining operations. These create real prosperity for the miners, their family, and through them their community. The large organizations make showy presentations of gifts to schools and clinics, but pay low wages, large bribes, to political powers to keep control of the resources. But they are real good at filling out the paperwork.

In Paris we have had lately a talking from an australian opal producer, Chris Price, who described precisely the kind of artisanal organization and benefits for their community that 1bwana1 alludes to, regarding the Lightning Ridge stones.
Well I think I will remember this talking forever, first because it was quite interesting, second because it was the last social meeting opportunity I had before we were ordered to stay at home !
