Hi, I've looked for any transcripts of previous chats with Doc Hanneman but can't find them following the link for "Chat Logs." Do they exist and how do I find them?

There are no transcripts - he happened to pop into the chat room one day and it was a very pleasant surprise. I bet Doos could convince him to have a scheduled chat with us.

Thanks, Snizzy. If he can be scheduled I'll definitely try to 'attend.'
I plan to respond to several previous posts but am presently being dragged by my ear to go shopping for a new clothes dryer. The old one has expired and I'm wearing the last clean sox that match anything I own.
Anyone in the U.S., Canada, etc. wishing to order Hanneman's books and materials may do so by contacting Hanneman Gemological Instruments, P.O. Box 1944, Granbury, TX 76048, USA. I don't have his new phone number and I don't believe he has a web page.

I haven't constructed the rosetta yet, but will do so this weekend. Might be fun to give it a try. I'll let you know. Maybe Dr. Hanneman will do us the honour to join our chats again.
I'd be pleased to have him do a chat. As for the Rosetta, I made mine 5 or 6 years ago when the book was published and find it extraordinarily helpful. I'm now reviewing the book and have taken the Rosetta and Garnet Refractometer of storage for a refresher. But I've run into 3 problems with the Rosetta:
1. R.I. readings above 1.81. His pinhole refractometer works pretty well if you can establish pavilion facet angles accurately. But some are devilishly difficult to determine with his little angle-reading device
2. Where does one take refractive index readings on any but round brilliant cuts? His instructions either don't explain that too well or I'm too dumb to understand. While writing this I may have received a glimpse of inspiration but will have to check before confirming it.
3. Lack of garnet spectrum information. Over time I've been able to put together quite a few charts but not many are readily available. Another of Dr. Hanneman's books, "Video-Spectroscopy," contains a number I haven't been able to locate elsewhere.
