Hi guys, So idk if this is the right place to post this, forgive me if it’s not. I got a “blue diamond,” from India and wanted to see if it looked real? I have COVID so I can’t go to a local Jewelers. Basically the woman that sold it to me said that it tests as a diamond in India with a hardness of 10, but to avoid controversy, she sells it as a moissanite. I’m just really confused-are these two stones interchangeable? Diamonds and moissanites? The certificate it came with said it’s diamond.
Oof. There's nothing but red flags here. Like a Soviet parade. Moissanite and diamond are very different beasties. A diamond would never be confirmed by hardness testing, and anyway moissanite is also very hard so would be difficult to separate that way (if anyone were insane enough to try it). Nobody would ever sell a diamond as moissanite to 'avoid controversy.' Reports on laminated cards are a gigantic red flag. Set in silver? It would be a miracle if the stone were at all as described on the card.

chrisssttt. thank you! I am ok with it being a moissy but want to make sure it isn't glass or cz.

Thank you guys so much for the responses! I know nothing about stones so it was really helpful I am hoping it's not glass or a cz, but I'd be fine if it was a moissanite. I think my best bet is to take it to a jewelers.

I used to hear a lot about technology being a double-edged sword. Having gone through a few scamming experiences, I can now attest to these kinds of experiences. In some parts of the world, like China, they are making these things so expertly with the use of latest technology that it could be extremely difficult to distinguish between real and synthetic gemstones.
That's why I now always prefer to have roughs, which I can then sit with an expert cutter who can shape the stone in front of my eyes.

Tons of very good synthetic, and simulated rough stones out there as well. I see them almost every day when I am out in the bush buying. The scammers have gotten very good at imitating rough. The Africans that are showing the stones have no idea that they are trying to sell fakes.
I see my faceting students buying lots of fake rough off the various online platforms.
You need to be very good to avoid getting scammed. I saw dealers in Tucson this year with over 40 years of buying rough behind them getting fooled.

I'm finding that as well. Lots of fakes and salted parcels even at mine sites. Our military in Afghanistan has fallen victim to not only fakes, but genuine emeralds and rubies that are essentially worthless.
