When using a hand held Ideal Scope today - I noticed an "umbrella effect" around the culet of the diamond. I have read that an "umbrella" effect seen through the microscope can indicate color enhancement, but wonder if this is also true for the Ideal Scope...
Thank you,
Katy B

Hi Tim,
An Ideal Scope is a small tool used to help grade a round brilliant cut's proportions.

Interesting question.
I graded the color as an I, with no fluorescence.
This diamond is the same one that I posted a question ablout earlier - the one with a strange inclusion...
Thank you!

Then the answer to your question is "no".

Umbrella effects are the result of a diamond being bombarded with neutrons from a cyclotron to cause a change in color. The penetration is shallow so only stones that have already been fashioned are treated in this way. Detection of this cyclotron irradiation is quite easy as it produces a color concentration known as the "umbrella effect" . The colors produced by this method are saturated, rather ghastly shades of blue and green.
