Diamond isn't soluble in acidic and alkaline solutions, with the exception of sulfochromic acid which can attack diamond. It is also attacked by molten potassium/sodium nitrate and by molten sodium/potassium hydroxide.

Would any of those potentially make a diamond look iridescent, like the original pic?

I don't know what a superficial chemical etching of diamond would look like, sorry.
Neither do I know what color is the flame when burning a diamond, but I must admit I am curious

Diamond crystals can get a smooth surface from hydrogen etching.

Tom

You would pass a hydrogen plasma over the surface of the diamond. The reaction produces methane and the surface becomes smoother.

Plasma etching is used as a research tool and in some fabrication processes of diamond components.

Hi Thomas.
Researching what?
Fabrication process? Are you referring to industrial applications of diamond? I'm not understanding.

Thanks for following through.
