I was thinking of this while reading Alberto's pole thread for Diamond vs. CZ master stones for diamond grading.
:smt017
Why is determining the color of a diamond such a convoluted mess?
Why do we accept this without challenge?
I've had discussions with diamond graders who are splitting hairs over a G color, high G; low G; middle G.
Isn't it clear that this is lunacy?
Isn't it clear we are just acting as minions for the diamond industry?

What's wrong with:
Colorless
Near Colorless
Faint yellow
Light Yellow
Yellow

Why do we allow a cartel to dictate our language?

Hear Hear! Though I am not a diamond expert, I heartily agree with you Barbra. The whole color grading shebang is designed, imo, to "create" value and thus to make money.

We disallow monopolies in every industry except two, that I am aware of: the creation of legal tender and diamonds. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Could it be that there is a pattern here?

perfectly agree...but still where would you put the boundaries? who decides it? i think we would have the same issues just with different terminology...
and yes i agree all the diamond industry is a big game in the hands of few players...im waiting for the day it will be more like color stones and "open market"...no rap, no discounts, bla, bla,...

well, i have no prob in using GIA colour grading system as i would have NO problem atall by using your suggested (and simpler) method too, the method is actually NOT the issue here. The real problem is we have a more or less worldwide accepted "pricelist" (rap) which is referring to a grading that is actually NOT followed on the same worldwide basis.
it's just like to agree by using the metric system and having different "metric" gauges....LOLOL

methink you already know the answer, no money in gemology and without money you are not able to influence almost anything..... :?

i think those diamond graders are not working with recent lab reports enough to understand that is a waste of time..........

there's no lunacy in a standard method IF it's effective and valid for the whole market.
such GIA scale could be enforced by developing of automated machines, the technology is already available since years, but there are 2 major issues:

1) as said, no money in gemology. R&D needed to design and build such instrument would lead to no profit atall......don't forget we're a too small (and poor) niche.

2) i'm not sure such instrument would be accepted by some big players..........there are still many players which actually take advantage by this situation......i'm sure you are all perfectly aware about the names without the need to clearly address them.... :?

yup, that is clear.....

again, nothing wrong but that is only a simplified system. without a REAL agreement such standard would be useless as any other

you already replied many times to your own question in the past: cos they were smart enough to do that and gemologists weren't strong enough to challenge it!

ciao

I'm repeating myself, just in case someone didn't read my rant earlier. :)

"Why do we allow a cartel to dictate our language?"

Does Iphone and apps ring a bell? :)

Follow the leader sheeple mentality.

Mixed color grades, just another diamond app for the hopelessly lost on useless innovation.

If the diamond color grades didn't start at D, I'd think the High, Middle and Low designations would be more appropriate for age adjusted brassiere (pardon moi) sizing recommendations.

Can I say that?
