This is my first post but I've been reading the posts in forum for several months. I have learned so much from them.

Recently I inhered a diamond from a relative. It did not come with a certificate. I sent the diamond to GIA last month and just got it back. It turned out the diamond was badly cut. That explained why the diamond does not sparkle.

I'm wondering if I should have it re-cut. It weights 0.88 carat, I color and SI2 clarity. I don't know if it even make sense to spend the money on it.

Can someone give me some suggestions? Luckily the GIA report I did was the new E-report. It has a good picture of my diamond in GIA's database. Maybe you can take a look at the picture and give me some thoughts?

The report number is: 2171057223

The picture there is much better than I can ever done. Thanks!

I took my diamond to a jewelry store today. The guy told me it's not a good idea to re-cut it. He said I will lose 1/3 of the weight, and not going to improve the grading much. He suggested me to keep it the way it is.

Thank you so much for posting this.
I have never seen a report like this.
I forwarded it to my co-workers at Lang Antiques and NO ONE has seen this kind of report.

This type of certification must be pretty new. The girl at GIA said she has never done it before. She was not even aware of its existence until I requested for it. I think the picture is pretty cool. I prefer the pictures over drawings.

Why is the cut grade listed as "good"?
Just curious - I don't do much with diamonds.

I don't know anything about grading. What does cut grade grading? I thought it only means how the corners meet and such.

I think you can cut it to a "very good" cut but you will end up with a 0.70 ct diamond and will cost you about $100-$150. If you are located near NYC i can introduce you to some cutters.

I don't know whether you have done anything with your diamond but I would like to report that I had three diamonds
recut by EmbeeDiaTech in Canada.

These belong to my sister. She damaged her engagement ring and it had a skive out of the pavilion more or less parallel with the pavilion mains. It was originally about 1.08 carat and ended up 88pts. We had them recut it to one of their 100 facet Sirius Star cuts. It came back AGS all zeros. ( the highest rating)

She also had a pair of SRBs recut to 80 facet Sirius Stars (because they were too small to cut the 100 facet version) She lost only three or four points on those stones which were less than 40 points and remained over thirty. She then had them added to her engagement ring.

They also do regular recuts if you don't want to convert to the Sirius Star. They are an AGS Registered Supplier. They are in Prince Albert Canada. http://www.embeediatech.ca/

The have their schedule of pricing on their web pages. They were a total pleasure to deal with.

Even though the diamonds are 33 and 35 points and 88 points the ring grabs your eye and does not let go.

I don't know whether I would have an SI2 recut. It can be improved if the clarity setting inclusions are at the edges where they might be ground out. They will evaluate this for you for a very reasonable price. If the stone is not too badly cut you may not lose as much weight as the jeweler said. This is something that ought to be determined by a cutter.

Hi,

This is an interesting candidate, and it can certainly be improved. The huge table and low crown angle, means it will have to be re-profiled or around 5.75mm. It should yield around a 3/4ct Ideal.
