Hi! I'm a newbie and any help would be greatly appreciated

My husband wants to buy a pair of studs (uncerted) for me. I did some research and read that the spectral images from man made stones (moissanites) appear "shorter and blocky (The blue end cut short) or appear doubled and overlaping." I'm not sure what that means and if the diamonds on the video appear to have those warning signs.

Here's the link for the video:https://youtu.be/BULmWStZ2U4

I would normally expect to see a lot more color from moissanites. However trying to identify a stone from a small video is an exercise in futility.

Thank you, dchallener! Is it possible for jewellers to see the difference between moissanite and diamond by photos and videos? Or do they have to have the stones on hand and have them louped?

Yes, and so can any child do the same. Just use the Hodgkinson Method.

This Method has been known and taught since 1980, but never by the GIA or GemA.
It appears that is because they can't seem to bring themselves to tout any ideas which require having to give credit to a competitor -- or else they have been too stupid to recognize the value of the simple concept to their students. Take your choice. :D :D

A jeweler cannot identify by photo or video. To add, most jewelers know next to nothing about gemology.

One needs a gem in hand to positively identify it.
Moissanite isn't cheap....
It is more highly dispersive than diamond and also doubly refractive.

If I wanted a diamond lookalike, I'd go with a synthetic diamond. Not cheap either.

If I wanted an artificial product, I'd go with ggg or cz.

I think we missed something KEY here!

prettyinpp - Moissonite (man-made or even natural) and Diamonds (man-made or natural) are two very different things! And will have two (or infinite) different values. You just need to decide on what you are really wanting (price point and quality) in a pair of stud earrings.
Good luck and have fun!

Katy. Good insight.

As far as similar properties to diamond, I've found GGG pretty close. Hard to find though.

Now, if I could find a pair of natural moissanite studs, I would definitely be interested....
