ALROSA president Andrey Zharkov announced at the recent World Diamond Council annual general meeting held in Moscow, that the Russian miner is conducting research into effective and fast detectors of lab-grown diamonds.Zharkov sounded a note of alarm that lab-grown diamonds have increasingly found their way into parcels of natural diamonds when they are sent for grading. He emphasized that there was a need to keep lab-grown and natural diamonds separate, and that ALROSA supported legislative initiatives to regulate the matter.A Russian governmental decree will come into effect in November, which demands that the vendor of a jewelry item stipulates the method of processing, including any changes in quality or color characteristics. Crucially, the label is also supposed to reveal whether the stone is precious (natural) or lab-grown.“The Federal Law regulating the turnover of precious metals and precious stones, with amendments adopted in May 2015, has strict definition of precious stones as those exclusively of natural origin; on the contrary, the stones of synthetic origin, even having characteristics of natural stones, are not considered to be precious ones. Therefore, the law determines that synthetic stones cannot be associated with precious stones,” Zharkov said.

It is my belief that the Russian academics have done more to potentially benefit the diamond industry ( and perhaps colored stones as well) than any other educational institution.
