All I know is what I read. What to do when what I read is a bit contradictory? On the topic of purple diamonds, I've read that the plastic deformations in the crystal lattice results in an absolutely true birefringence with dichroism. Other sources claim that, because diamond is isotropic, both birefringence and dichroism is impossible. Rather, it's high-order strain in the stone. Help a n00b out and share your thoughts?

I suppose you might find the same kind of anomalous pseudo-anisotropic reaction as in some garnets, due to internal strain. But to be honest I never had the opportunity to manipulate a purple diamond !
